Default UN sees new peril in Asia's huge brown cloud cover

Quote:
BEIJING – Thick brown clouds of soot, particles and chemicals stretching from the Persian Gulf to Asia threaten health and food supplies in the world, the U.N. reported Thursday, citing what it called the newest threat to the global environment.

The regional haze, known as atmospheric brown clouds, contributes to glacial melting, reduces sunlight, and helps create extreme weather conditions that impact agricultural production, according to the report commissioned by the U.N. Environment Program.

The huge plumes have darkened 13 megacities in Asia_ including Beijing, Shanghai, Bangkok, Cairo, Mumbai and New Delhi — sharply "dimming" the amount of light by as much as 25 percent in some places.

Caused by the burning of fossil fuels, wood and plants, the brown clouds also play a significant role in exacerbating the effects of greenhouse gases in warming up the earth's atmosphere, the report said.

"Imagine for a moment a three-kilometer-thick (1.8-mile-thick) band of soot, particles, a cocktail of chemicals that stretches from the Arabic Peninsula to Asia," said Achim Steiner, U.N. undersecretary general and executive director of the U.N. environment program.
i guess the UN is fed up with pollution coming from asia, looks like yall will get your wish that those countries do their part...

What can the UN do? You said yourself, Oki, that the UN isnt a Governing body. What can the UN honestly for China to do? I mean, hell, China even has veto power in the UN, so it doesnt really matter WHAT the majority wishes, China will just veto it, and that will be the end of it...

maybe, yea. its not all about what cant they make china do. these things are handled though international pressure, words, it can hurt china economically if they do nothing. the Un is no gouv., but it does mean something if they say this in the media, thats the first bit of pressure. it can mean that at some point the g10 or whatver comes together and plan to make a new treaty on reduction, that china might refiuse to sigh, but it will loose prestige and stronger ties with a lot of countries then.

China is at some level an economic entity-its more dominant authority is political but the economic sector enjoys a lot of prestige in that country-being that China is intersted in making the global scene -yes they need to keep tabs on what the intl community thinks-the UN matters more to them than it does to us-we're too stupid tosee it matters in this country..

America buys everything from China, and China owns all of our Tbills. We would bankrupt each other and start World War 3 if we started putting any real pressure on them. No, nothing will be done about the polution, sadly. While I dont agree with Global Warming, I do think polution is bad.

Hey, Oki, I had an idea you might like to save the planet and all that bullshit. I think I could be a billionare with the idea! It would definantly conserve on engery costs like heating and cooling a home. It would be very expensive and very impractical but thats the kind of Green Tech you liberals love anyways! I will just keep this one to myself!

I dont know, it hasnt really worked with rouge nations. I mean, you dont agree with America's policy of pressure that says play nice or we will bomb you. I think that would work much better than "play nice or we will discuss passing a resolution condeming you, which will prolly just be Vetoed by Russia anyways..."

Pressure only works when you have some guns behind it.
