The government makes more in taxes on a gallon of gas than an oil company does profits. Average oil company profits are (from memory) about 8.5%. This is not an excessive amount - especially considering the large capital investment required.
If one doesn't like the price of gasoline, one may figure out ways to use less. Supply vs. Demand actually works, as evidenced by the drop in SUV sales and the increase in ones for Hybrids and higher fuel efficiency vehicles. Of course, all of this would be easier if we: drilled for domestic oil and vastly increased our use of nuclear power.
