Research from the Oregon Health and Science University has shown that cigarette smoking slows the production of FANCD2, a protein found in lung cells. This protein plays a huge part in the repair of damaged DNA, such as cancerous cells.
Dr Laura Hays, who led the research, said: "These findings show the important role FANCD2 plays in protecting lung cells against cigarette smoke and may explain why cigarette smoke is so toxic to these cells."
Dr Lesley Walker from Cancer Research UK said: "This interesting piece of science adds to our understanding of why smoking is so deadly. Smoking is the single biggest preventable cause of cancer and causes nine out of ten cases of lung cancer."

I wonder if it is more from all the chemicals (like over 400) that is used in making the cigarettes, than the tobacco? Granted, the tobacco probably isn't the best for you either just by itself, BUT, I wonder if it is made WORSE by all the chemicals?
