This summer, on the 'Red Button Day', scientists will turn on the LHC (Large Hadron Collider), and also open The Grid, which can send data online 10,000 times faster than current standards. Movies can be downloaded in 5 seconds, for example.
Scientists began developing The Grid several years ago when they realized the jaw-dropping annual amount of info collected from LHC can't be stored locally. A small academic network has already been in use by researchers to design drugs to fight malaria. The Grid, according to experts, will transmit holographic data, revolutionize business, and lead to 'Cloud Computing'- where users store all data online. The LHC is expected to reveal secrets about the Higgs boson particle which gives matter mass. This is what I'm thinking.

The government and big business is my concern. It will be nice to dl a movie in 5 minutes instead of hours/days, but I'm sure RIAA has their hands in that pie too. It's probably all a big trap.

Actually, it's at least 20 years away for the average user. The grid is real, but it can only be accessed by universities and science types. The average user has a connection to a local ISP that could never handle the speeds they talk about. That article is science fiction for the most part.
However the LHC could be a major scientific event, if they ever get permission to fire it up. Right now there are lawsuits and scientists are making predictions about what will happen when it gets turned on. Some are saying doomsday. Doomsday fears spark lawsuit - Cosmic Log - msnbc.com ![]() |
