Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign for attacking Barack Obama, New York's highest-ranking African-American lawmaker got a surprise call from Bill Clinton and an intimate jet ride with the former president to commemorative ceremonies in Selma, Ala., on Sunday. Senate Minority Leader Malcolm Smith, a Queens Democrat, yesterday called the trip "a life-altering experience." But Smith still refused to endorse Sen. Clinton for president. "I never had the opportunity to sit for four hours with the president of the United States," Smith recalled. "He talked to me about things from Prague, to [Nelson] Mandela, to Westchester County to things dealing with transportation, infrastructure issues, the Democratic Party and the state Senate," added Smith, who said former Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields and a speechwriter for Time Warner CEO Richard Parsons were also onboard. But what about talking about Sen. Clinton's presidential campaign? "That never came up," Smith insisted during an interview on WROW-AM in Albany. Nevertheless, Smith told associates he was convinced the ex-president called him because of his critical comments about the Clinton campaign - saying it "overreacted" to criticism of Clintons from Hollywood mogul David Geffen, a backer of Illinois Sen.
