Actually, the #1 US port on the Gulf Coast of the USA is halfway between Baton Rouge and New Orleans

I see no reason why New Orleans shouldn't remain a Tourist attraction, but industry will move to Baton Rouge.

Default Not Presidential Material

I don't know anything at all about Ron Paul - other than that he never had enough support to make him a contender for the presidential nomination. It seems to me that in the various preperations for speakers, etc. at the RNC there was some mention that he had his shorts all in a bunch about not being asked to speak at the convention and he thought he should have had the right to do that. Am I correct in my memory about that?

There was a Gustav film clip interview with him today that just astounded me. He was all dejected looking and grumping that he couldn't see anything that activities or attendees at a convention in Minnesota could do to make any difference with anything that was going on in the Gulf Coast states. He was grousing about everything that was being changed to accommodate a natural disaster over which we had no control and thinks it should be business as usual at the convention. Seems his Texas ass was planning a "Ronathon" convention for himself up in the Twin Cities - very safely out of harm's way.

Is he nuts? That's the first time I've ever seen him or heard anything he had to say about anything in his run for the presidency - so my first impression becomes "Is he this calous towards his own constituents? He's is definitely not presidential material."

By limiting the convention to the bare minimum, it gives the impression that republican leaders are busy planning for relief efforts. In reality, there are thousands of local, state and federal employees who handle the logistics and all operations. All the leadership of both parties will be doing is looking for news cameras.

Lets not forget the Port of Memphis! Its on the Missisippi River, as well, and its 395 miles NORTH of the Port of New Orleans!

AND there is a Navy Base in Millington, TN, just north of Memphis... The Navy is considering moving from New Orleans and expanding Millington.

Naval Support Activity (NAVSUPPACT) Mid-South

Quote:
In its 2005 BRAC Recommendations, DoD recommended to close Naval Support Activity New Orleans, LA. As a result, it recommended to relocate some of its units to Millington. DoD recommended to relocate the Navy Reserve Personnel Command and the Enlisted Placement and Management Center to Naval Support Activity Mid-South, Millington and consolidate with the Navy Personnel Command at Millington; relocate the Naval Reserve Recruiting Command to Millington and consolidate with the Navy Recruiting Command at Millington. The collocation of the Navy Reserve Personnel Command, the Enlisted Placement Management Center, and Naval Reserve Recruiting Command at Naval Support Activity Mid-South would create a Navy Human Resources Center of Excellence, improve personnel life-cycle management, and further active and reserve component total force integration and effectiveness. This recommendation would consolidate Reserve personnel and recruiting headquarters with like active component functions in a single location and would eliminate stand-alone headquarters. In addition, activities of the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Navy Manpower Analysis Center and Navy Personnel Research and Development Center were located at Naval Support Activity Mid-South, which would allow for further concentration of functions.
