Default Songs I've obsessed over, in no particular order

Note that "obsessing" over does not necessarily mean "like." More like songs that seem to get into my DNA for a week or two and then mercifully self-purge.

Figured I'd see if I could remember as many of them as I could think of, with a brief description as to the why and wherefore and time period involved. Plus lyrics and/or youtube linkys, if available.

Insomnia is an awful, awful thing. It makes you do truly pointless things. Like start this thread.

First up, the most recent song (as of last night) to reach this lofty status:

Harvey Danger Flagpole Sitta

Since I take great pride in my absolute ignorance of all music produced since about 1989 or so, I have absolutely no idea who this artist is, but when I saw a link to the video on another site, yup, this one pushed the right buttons.

getting the video not available message? Well, here's a the Link

Quote:
Harvey Danger Flagpole Sitta

I had visions, I was in them
I was looking into the mirror
To see a little bit clearer
Rottenness and evil in me

Fingertips have memories
Mine can't forget the curves of your body
And when I feel a bit naughty
I run it up the flagpole and see who salutes
(But no one ever does)

I'm not sick but I'm not well
and I'm so hot cause I'm in hell

Been around the world and found
That only stupid people are breeding
The cretins cloning and feeding
And I don't even own a tv

Put me in the hospital for nerves
And then they had to commit me
You told them all I was crazy
They cut off my legs now I'm an amputee, Goddamn you

I'm not sick but I'm not well
And I'm so hot cause I'm in hell
I'm not sick but I'm not well
And it's a sin to live so well

I wanna publish 'zines
And rage against machines
I wanna pierce my tongue
It doesn't hurt, it feels fine
The trivial sublime
I'd like to turn off time
And kill my mind
You kill my mind

Paranoia paranoia
Everybody's coming to get me
Just say you never met me
I'm running underground with the moles
Diggin' holes

Hear the voices in my head
I swear to God it sounds like they're snoring
But if you're bored then you're boring
The agony and the irony, they're killing me, whoa!

I'm not sick but I'm not well
And I'm so hot cause I'm in hell
I'm not sick but I'm not well
And it's a sin to live this well
(One, two, three, four!)

Devo - Mr. B's Ballroom

I have no idea why this song appealed to me so much. But it did. It had its two weeks circa 1982 or 3 (I do know I was still in high school). Possibly the nihilism, possibly the reverse snobbery, who can say?

Quote:
Devo - Mr. B's Ballroom

three cheers!
they're yellin' again
three cheers!
they'll be at it to the end

so drink some big beers and go crazy tonight
they're all dressed up and
they'll be gettin' it tonight

big swingers in double knits tonight
big babies gonna get in a fight
actin' crazy bustin' up the chairs
doubled over gettin' sick on the stairs

they know the limits 'cause they
cross them every night
the dull sensations as it turns real hot
why, the guys in the back with
their heads on the floor
surrounded by their buddies
they're all hollerin' for more
whoa whoa whoa
it's mr. b's ballroom

party time turn the music up loud
party time lose your head in the crowd
yellin' laughin' tryin' hard to act smart
put 'em under pressure and you
watch them fall apart
freeze! come on out of there
freeze! you ain't goin' nowhere
freeze! put your hands on your head
freeze!
it's mr. b's ballroom

whoa whoa whoa
it's mr. b's ballroom
(repeat)

Head East - Never Been Any Reason

Can't believe it is all dudes singing this, must 70s era tight pants or something. Remember being about 12 or 13 and literally keeping my radio on all night in hopes this song would come on. Still an amazing display of raw vocal power, as tedious as the lyrics are.

Quote:
Head East - Never Been Any Reason

Did you see any action?
Did you make any friends?
Would you like some affection?
(…before I leave again.)
I been walking behind you
Since you been able to see.
There's never been any reason
For you to think about me.

Did you have any bad dreams?
Did you break any glass?
Would you be my companion?
Is there even a chance?
You been talking in circles
Since I been able to cry.
There's never been any reason
For never telling me why.
Save my life - I'm going down for the last time!
Woman with the sweet loving - better than a white lie.
Bring a good feeling ain't had in such a long time.
Save my life - I'm going down for the last time!

Have you every been lonely?
Do you have any fun?
Do you ever think of me?
I'm just another o-o-o-o-one. Yea!
You never give me no answers;
You never tell me the truth.
There's never been any reason
For me to think about you.
There's never been any reason…
There's never been any reason. Yea-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-ah!
There's never been any reason.
Save my life - I'm going down for the last time!
Woman with the sweet loving - better than a white lie. (Don’t you know she could…)
Bring a good feeling ain't had in such a long time.
Save my life - I'm going down for the last time! Who-o-o-o-o-o-oah!
Save my life - I'm going down for the last time!
Save my life - I'm going down for the last time!
Save my life - I'm going down for the last time!
Save my life - I'm going down for the last time!
Save my life - I'm going down for the last ti-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-ime!

Benny Goodman - Sing, Sing, Sing

Bit disappointed the kick-ass version from Carnegie Hall circa 1936 or 37 isn't on Youtube, since that is the one to listen to. This one is a Benny past his prime, no Gene Krupa, three annoying broads in place of the screaming trumpet section, etc. Well, one can't have everything.

I think I was in third grade when I first heard this, dad was and is a huge Jazz fan. Seven years of trumpet playing later I concluded I have no sense of tone or rhythm. But this is the song that sent me down that silly path to high school band fag.

The Beat/English Beat - Mirror in the Bathroom

LMAO, listened to this one over and over drinking cheap beer after getting dumped in college. What a fucking tool I was back then. I'm so much more mature nowadays.

Quote:
Mirror in the bathroom
please talk free
The door is locked
just you and me.
Can I take you to a restaurant
that's got glass tables
You can watch yourself
while you are eating.
Mirror in the bathroom
I just can't stop it,
Every Saturday you see me
window shopping.
Find no interest in the
racks and shelves
Just a thousand reflections
of my own sweet self, self, self...
Mirror in the bathroom
You're my mirror in the bathroom
You're my mirror in the bathroom
You're my mirror in the bathroom...
Mirror in the bathroom
recompense
For all my crimes
of self defense.
Cures you whisper
make no sense
Drift gently into
mental illness.
Mirror in the bathroom
please talk free
The door is locked
just you and me.
Can I take you to a restaurant
that's got glass tables
You can watch yourself
while you are eating.
Mirror in the bathroom
Mirror in the bathroom...

need to add:

violent femmes - gone, daddy, gone
black sabbath - I
black sabbath - falling off the edge of the world
talking heads - crosseyed and painless
faith no more - we care a lot

consider:

suicidal tendencies - institutionalized
b-52s - channel Z
if available, that weird techno remix of tubular bells
? (some 40s or 50s country singer) - ***tle call
judas priest - a touch of evil
possibly some maynard ferguson, though not sure what.
led zeppelin - the battle of evermore
the clash - the magnificent seven

Default how the hell did I forget this one?

The Cramps - Tear it Up

Saw Urggh: A Music War in 1981 or 1982, had to own this one. Went to music store and bought some Cramps vinyl...and found out this wasn't on it.

Awesome or awesomely awful on so many levels I dunno where to start. Lux Interior as an Elvis impersonator on acid is simply amazing. Pity he's surrounded by a cast of characters that have no clue how to play their instruments. Plus no bass, making it sound even thinner.

Any resemblence between these lyrics and what Lux is actually 'singing' is doubtless unintentional....

Quote:
Well, come on little mamma, let's tear this dance floor up
Come on little mamma, let's tear this dance floor up
Come on little mamma, let's see you strut your stuff
Tear it up pa pa pa pa
Tear it up pa pa pa pa
Tear it up
Tear it up
Come on little mamma, tear this dance floor up

Well you step back baby, and you move my way,
step around again and let me hear you say

Yeah, you (?) back baby, turn it my way
Turn around again and let me hear what you say
Tear it up
Tear it up
Come on little mamma, let's tear this dance floor up

Tear it up pa pa pa pa
Tear it up pa pa pa pa pa pa
Tear it up
Tear it up
Come on little mamma, tear this dance floor up
I'm a-leavin' little mamma, gonna be gone a long long time
I'm a-leavin' little mamma, gonna be gone a long long time
Come on little mamma, let's show you a real good time

Whoaa
Tear it up pa pa pa pa
Tear it up pa pa pa pa
Whoaa
Tear it up
Come on little mamma, tear this dance floor up
Tear it up pa pa pa pa
Tear it up pa pa pa pa
Tear it up
Tear it up
Come on little mamma, tear this dance floor up
Tear it up pa pa pa pa
Tear it up pa pa pa pa
Tear it up

Come on little mamma, tear this dance floor up
Right now !
