One of America's most influential conservative judges, Richard Posner, has proposed a ban on linking to online content without permission. The idea, he said in a blog post last week, is to prevent aggregators and bloggers from linking to newspaper websites without paying:

Expanding copyright law to bar online access to copyrighted materials without the copyright holder's consent, or to bar linking to or paraphrasing copyrighted materials without the copyright holder's consent, might be necessary to keep free riding on content financed by online newspapers from so impairing the incentive to create costly news-gathering operations that news services like Reuters and the Associated Press would become the only professional, nongovernmental sources of news and opinion.

continued
I guess this thread would be illegal if this somehow came to pass? :w00t:

Superfund money to clean 'mouth of the beast'
And people say there's no such thing as progress...lookie here, where we've created strains of bacteria that eat iron and shit sulfuric acid. :P

article link
Superfund money to clean 'mouth of the beast'

Peter Fimrite, Chronicle Staff Writer

Friday, June 12, 2009

Rick Sugarek knows not to splash through the puddles inside "the mouth of the beast."

That is what he calls the gaping wound near Redding known to everybody else as the Iron Mountain Mine, which is widely regarded by scientists as one of the most polluted places in the world.

The project manager for the Environmental Protection Agency said he once dropped a pen in some running water inside the mine and when he recovered it, it was coated in copper. The water is so acidic that droplets eat holes in blue jeans and dissolve the stitching on boots, much like battery acid.

Sugarek stood Thursday in a shaft once known as the Richmond Mine. It is the source of the toxic stew that has polluted the Sacramento River and its tributaries for more than a century, killed thousands of fish and turned a once-majestic mountain into a hellish breeding ground for nasty bacterial slime that helps create what geologists say is the "world's worst water.
"
Lethal blend of copper, iron

Tens of thousands of fish have been killed since then. By the time the EPA took over management of the area in the 1980s, a ton of acidic water and heavy metals a day were flowing into the river, Sugarek said. The water in the debris dam was blood red from a mixture of iron and copper.

Desperate, the EPA built the Slick Rock Creek Retention Dam in 2004, which captured 98 percent of the sludge. The sludge is dried and dumped in the open pit mine on top of the mountain. Now the EPA is concentrating on the leftover mess.

But money cannot completely resolve the problem. Researchers recently found six unique strains of bacteria that live in a bed of pink slime that is part of a little-understood biochemical cycle that devours iron, produces sulfuric acid, and creates a nightmarish broth of copper, zinc and arsenic. That toxic broth will continue pouring out of the mine forever, or until someone figures out a way to neutralize the chemical and biological reactions, scientists say.
Wii Repair

I got my Wii the first day it came out. I worked night shift and luckily I had that night off so was able to be there at midnight. I worked the night before, however, so when I got off work I went straight to walmart... getting there at 7:20 AM to wait in line. My girlfriend (current wife) got there about 9AM to wait with me. We waited for fukcing ever!! But, sure enough, by noon, the line was full. We got our two Wii's though... :D

Anyways, I bring that up only to show, I have had my Wii for a very fukcing long time! When Super Smash Bros. Brawl came out last year, I was one of the many unfortunate people who had to send in their Wii for a repair. It was free, however, including the shipping, and I got it back a week later! I was amazed by the speed. And most companies don't do free repairs like that! AND it extended my warranty by another year! Awesome customer service!

Well, I went to play Mario Kart with the Wii and apparently went it fell a week ago we damaged it. I called about getting it repaired but unfortunately our free one year extended warranty had ended three months ago.. But they are going to fix it for us very cheaply and also they are going to extend the warranty for another year for free. Apparently this is something they do every time they work on a system.

All I can say is this, for everything Nintendo lacks in big flashy games and awesome graphics, they more than make up for in customer service.

Funny car review...Honda Insight as POS

Of course, no American car reviewer would have the balls to write something like this, for fear of offending advertisers. Too bad. Cuz this gave me a chuckle, and I'm not much of a car person.
Honda Insight 1.3 IMA SE Hybrid

Much has been written about the Insight, Honda’s new low-priced hybrid. We’ve been told how much carbon dioxide it produces, how its dashboard encourages frugal driving by glowing green when you’re easy on the throttle and how it is the dawn of all things. The beginning of days.

So far, though, you have not been told what it’s like as a car; as a tool for moving you, your friends and your things from place to place.

So here goes. It’s terrible. Biblically terrible. Possibly the worst new car money can buy. It’s the first car I’ve ever considered crashing into a tree, on purpose, so I didn’t have to drive it any more.

The biggest problem, and it’s taken me a while to work this out, because all the other problems are so vast and so cancerous, is the gearbox. For reasons known only to itself, Honda has fitted the Insight with something called constantly variable transmission (CVT).

link
Fond Of Wolves? You must live in urban area.

As Wisconsin’s timber wolf population grows and lives more willingly among humans than expected, the once-endangered species is making more meals out of pets and livestock across the North Woods.

In turn, wolves that learn it’s relatively easy to kill the fatted calf and lamb — or the lean hunting dog, for that matter — are targeted because the Department of Natural Resources has permission from the federal government to remove trouble-makers.

For those keeping score, the DNR killed 17 of the state’s approximately 350 wolves in 2003 after documenting they had killed 20 head of cattle, including 18 calves; 24 sheep, including 17 lambs; and six hunting dogs. Wolves also injured four other dogs and one privately owned whitetail on a deer farm.

continued
The guy behind this sounds like he's on some kind of mood stabilizer, doesn't he? We'll soon find out...
(PhysOrg.com) -- A new search engine described as an "electronic brain" could make searching the Internet more intelligent. Called Wolfram Alpha, the search engine computes its own answers rather than looking them up in a large database, as Google and many other search engines currently do. With its computational abilities, Wolfram Alpha could lead to new types of questions, answers and computations that today's search engines can't handle.

Wolfram Alpha is being developed by Stephen Wolfram, best known as the creator of the computational software Mathematica, with more than 100 people working on the project. The designers plan to launch the search engine this May.

One person, Nova Spivack, the CEO of Radar Networks, which developed the semantic Web-based Twine application, had the chance to try out Wolfram Alpha. As Spivack explained, "You can ask it scientific questions and it can compute the answers for you. Even if it has not been programmed explicitly to answer each question you might ask it."

link
U.S. regulatory czar nominee wants Net 'Fairness Doctrine'

"Electronic sidewalks." While forcing her to do research, I noticed that Sea Monkeys were actually a Brine Shrimp, and decided to go to Target and buy a little starter kit (cost < $10). It came with a little "wrist mini-aquarium" in which, should I find it amusing to forever have her branded as TOTAL GEEK GIRL, I could fill the little bubble with Sea Monkeys, attach it to her wrist, and dispatch her off to school. Anyway, on my second attempt, MY sea monkeys are doing swimmingly: The Main Aquarium, about half the size of a Pop-Tart box, easily fits on the desk and requires no more maintainance than the average house plant. 2.0

Even as banks topple, Juan Enriquez says the big reboot is yet to come. But don’t look for it on your ballot — or in the stock exchange. It’ll come from science labs, and it promises keener bodies and minds. In just a generation or two, kids are going to be very different from what they are right now. She was later allowed onto another flight, no doubt after a thorough cavity search and being maced a few times. But his fans think that his performance as the Joker was so good that no actor can do it better. So they want Hollywood to “retire” the Joker character to ensure that no-one plays the role ever again.* In order to attain their goal, they have started a web campaign to garner support. You can sign the petition (for all the good it will do - I am very cynical about online petitions), download a Joker card, join the Flickr page, visit their YouTube or Facebook page or subscribe to their RSS feed. But the site is attracting some rather negative and nasty comments such as the one below :
“The group says once they get 50,000 signatures they’re going to march on Warner Bros. or something like that. In the time that it takes them to get 50,000 signatures for a petition that stupid, I’m guessing that I could build a device to electroshock Heath Ledger back to life so he can continue the role himself.”
As the Joker himself would say “why so serious?“ More...

Arrr! Showdown at the Pirate Bay Begins

By Casey LynnContributing Writer, [GAS]It seems fitting that pirates shouldn’t go down without a fight, and so it is no surprise that four of them say they are innocent*of copyright infringement in regards to the torrent site The Pirate Bay. The trial started today in the Stockholm District Court. Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, 28, Peter Sunde, 30, Fredrik Neij, 30, and Carl Lundstrom, 48, are accused of giving away music, movies, and software for free, but they say that they’re not giving away anything–the site doesn’t host the copyrighted material, only torrents. If convicted, they face up to two years in prison, and $14.3 million in damage claims from companies like Warner Bros., MGM, and Sony.I don’t claim to know anything about Swedish law, but based on some of the reported opening remarks, it sounds like the arguments are pretty similar to what would occur in U.S. law. The prosecution says, “promoting other people’s infringements of copyright laws.” Sounds like contributory infringement or maybe inducement. And the defense says, “It is legal to offer a service that can be used in both a legal and illegal way, according to Swedish law.” Sounds like substantial non-infringing uses. But they’re not in the U.S., so who knows. The four (alleged) pirates don’t seem to be worried, though. From Threat Level, here’s some gems from the accused:
“[Svartholm] lived up to his defiant reputation Sunday, calling his prosecutor a “clown,” and saying he doubted that the prosecutor passed fifth-grade math. . . . ‘I lost my web hosting firm, PRQ, as a result of this and have a lot of debt and live abroad now where I help poor people get on the net,’ he said. ‘So they will get nothing.’ He promised ‘to happily frame all collection letters and put them on the wall.’ . . . [Sunde] said, The Pirate Bay will be up and running. ‘We are four individuals on trial. But The Pirate Bay has its own life. It is not dependent on us as persons.’”
For better or worse, The Pirate Bay does have its supporters. Like this “tribute to the brave souls who run The Pirate Bay” from ross_angus on Flickr:“It is the distant future, a time of galactic strife. The three heroes of The Pirate Bay, Gottfrid Svartholm, Mikael Viborg, and Fredrik Neij have finally been cornered by the RIAA, their assets frozen like their galleon in the ice. Using only their sappier-like wit against the legal weapons raised against them, they send out a trio of useless bots against their adversaries. . . .” Well, the story goes on from there. Sorry, I couldn’t resist making that joke. What is the point of a study like this?** I mean, they held a press conference to announce this.** What were they expecting?** CNN to kick President Obama off the air and to have a Breaking News “Men Smell of Cheese, Women Smell of Onions” - Over to Wolf Blitzer In The Situation Room!I can imagine there are much better scientific studies that money can be better spent on than this.[Via New Scientist] More...

30,000 people fall for ComputerTan hoax

By Johnny DanielsContributing Writer, [GAS] This is overwhelming proof that people really will fall for anything they hear and read. A UK skin cancer charity called Skcin wanted to raise more awareness of the medical condition so they set up a fake website called ComputerTan.** This site promised people a suntan from nothing more than the heat rays from their PC monitors while they type. You can feel “tan-tastic!” But the 30,000 people who were gullible enough to click on the link for more information were instead confronted with pictures of people with tumors and were given statistics and facts on the condition. All in all, this is a pretty slick, savvy and humorous marketing campaign and since it managed to hit the news headlines in the UK, it seems to have done the trick.** It’s hard to believe though that anyone seriously thought that they were going to get a suntan from their PC monitor! I really think Microsoft has a winner on their hands here. It turns out that there’s no official ban on the website, but some stores are apparently choosing to block it from the store’s computers (some redirecting the site to the Apple homepage). Personally, I don’t see the problem with blocking the site if it’s actually a problem; after all, they’ve already done the same thing with MySpace. As I find myself incredibly annoyed pretty much every time I have to go to an Apple store due to the crowds, anything that’s going to keep people moving in and out seems like a swell idea to me. With being a store and a tech support site and some sort of learning annex, I think the retail locations are wearing enough hats without being Internet cafes, too. Along those same lines, the Apple store in Nashville particularly annoys me because there’s nowhere to sit. If you’ve got to wait for your name to show up on the Genius Bar screen, there should at least be somewhere for you to stay out of the way instead of standing in the middle of the store while people are constantly bumping into you. And on the subject of Internet cafes, I think that Starbucks would benefit from sticking a few computers in there, or at least offering free wireless (and apparently they can use all the help they can get right now). Maybe the mall locations would suck some of the people out of the overflowing Apple stores. It just makes me feel like smashing the clocks to little pieces. And hitting the snooze button on those things doesn’t really give you a measure of satisfaction since you can’t hit them as hard as you want, else you’d just break them. But thanks to the Smashing Clock, your dream could one day come true… if someone has the good sense of actually manufacturing the thing on a large scale. In order to shut the clock’s alarm off, the only thing you need to do is to smash it as hard as you can with your fist. Not only will this give you a measure of satisfaction, but the adrenaline the action brings into your system will help you kick start your day the good way.[Via OhGizmo] More...

I Got A New Cell Phone - Can You Help?

I got a new phone (yay! :woot: ) and I absolutely lurve it!One problem - I can't figure out how to turn off the keypad lock. If the 23,000% bit is really true, then those DVD’s must really be flying off the store shelves like rockets, and it just goes to show (MPAA and RIAA) that if you treat people with a bit of respect and give them something for free, they will respond in kind and buy something from you.*That strategy seems to have worked fantastically well for the Pythons and now they are doing funny walks all the way to the bank. It will be interesting to see if any American TV shows will follow the example and start YouTube channels in order to generate DVD revenue.*The idea obviously works.*I for one wouldn’t mind seeing a South Park or Family Guy YouTube channel set up with high quality clips.*It doesn’t even have to be comedy.*Any show with memorable scenes can set up on YouTube, put these scenes online as high quality clips, and invite people to buy the DVD’s.*What do you think? Everyone loves watching widescreen movies – still, for some people, 16:9 still isn’t wide enough. Philips will soon be launching a new television set supporting an aspect ratio of 21:9 – the same aspect ratio as you’d find in Panavision film. The new “Cinema 21:9 LCD TV” will have a diagonal of 56 inches and will feature the Ambilight technology, for that extra degree of immersion. The tradeoff, of course, is that (if my trigonometry is right) is that HD programs will have an effective viewing area of 45″ and SD programs, an effective viewing area or 36″, though Philips says it will somehow make 16:9 HD programs fill the screen. According to Philips, further details on the Cinema 21:9 LCD TV will be available by the end of February. They have also confirmed that the display is set for release sometime in Spring 2009. She will resume if and when she is permitted to.”According to The Daily Mail, the novel is about the “sordid lifestyle” of the staff of a British professional firm in Moscow (hmmm, no wonder she has that “The events and persons depicted herein are fictional and any resemblance to events or persons live or dead is purely coincidental” disclaimer at the bottom of the page). The promiscuous protagonist (who describes herself as part drug addict and part alcoholic) and her colleagues “are constantly seeking new sexual conquests, attend obscene sex shows involving donkeys and dwarves, blow fortunes at expensive restaurants and gossip about where they are planning to get drunk next.”I have to quote this from the article because I just couldn’t force myself to read more than the first few pages. Though I pretty much got the gist from the first sentence: “There is something thrilling about being in bed with a Frenchman, even if he does have a small cock which he can’t get up, I thought, as Pierre gently kissed my eyelids and stroked my face.”On the one hand, I respect Ms. Dare’s right to write her porn. In fact, any quality issues aside, I applaud the creative endeavor, and given how many people out there like to read erotica, why not put it up on the net where other people can enjoy it? However, I cannot possibly imagine what possessed her to not only publish it under her real name, but to put it on a website with her full name in the URL.One of the first things they tell first year law students is to*check your Facebook page and make sure that you don’t have any pictures posted of yourself doing keg stands during Spring Break or have your favorite movie listed as The Cannabis Grow Bible. It might not be fair, but the truth is, if you’re going to work in a certain job, especially if it’s high-profile, then you’ve got to keep your public face clean. It may seem like the guys at Allen & Ovary are being prudish, but I can understand why they wouldn’t want a new client who is googling his lawyer’s name because he’s misplaced her email address to find, instead of her official firm profile, a website where she’s writing about poorly-endowed Frenchmen. Especially considering that, given the subject matter of the book (and even the character’s name, Dasha, which she says is just a Russian-sounding name she picked that was close to her own), one could easily infer that it’s at least partially autobiographical. And whereas knowing that your lawyer writes erotica in her free time might not be so bad, suspecting that she does drugs and comes to work hungover most days might be a bit troubling.Still, it looks like the firm’s intentions may have backfired, since now googling “Deidre Dare” leads to pages of news articles about this very scandal. What do you you guys think? Are her bosses being fair? Should Ms. Dare have been more discreet? Or does the firm have no business telling her what she can or cannot put on the Internet? More...

Fox/Warner Settlement: Watchmen is ON!

By Casey LynnContributing Writer, [GAS]Most of you have probably already seen the trailer for Watchmen by now, and if you’re a fan, you’ve probably been on pins and needles knowing that the film might not actually see the light of day. The two studios have been waging a battle for a year over the distribution rights, stemming from Fox’s allegation that they had already optioned Alan Moore’s graphic novel, and Warner Brothers producer Larry Gordon had failed to obtain the rights before beginning his own Watchmen project. On December 24, a District Court judge (working on Christmas Eve?) granted Fox’s copyright claim. This must have been pretty scary for Warner Brothers, since they’ve already been advertising like mad, and slated the film for a March 9 release.Of course, no matter whose name ended up on it, the real tragedy would have been if the film simply languished in litigation and negotiations for years. Luckily for the fans, the studios apparently realized that neither of them would make money if that happened, and came to a settlement. They haven’t announced the exact details, but various news sources have reported that Warner agreed to pay Fox as much as 8.5% of the film’s gross receipts and $1.5 million to cover the development costs. The studios did do a nice job of patting each other on the back in a joint statement: “Warner Bros. acknowledges that Fox acted in good faith in bringing its claims, which were asserted prior to the start of principal photography. Fox acknowledges that Warner Bros. acted in good faith in defending against those claims.” They probably figured that bad PR for either one of them would only hurt the film.I think this is great news, and I can’t wait to see the film. Alan Moore has been notoriously disappointed in the previous adaptations of his work (including The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and V for Vendetta), to the point where he’s said he doesn’t watch them. I’ve still got pretty high hopes for this one, though, just based on the buzz and the trailer. More...

College Girl Drops Out of School Because of… Ubuntu?

Hmmm… don’t you find her excuses just a little… how should I say… pathetic?
